Can't really remember the 50's (only a kid then but remember doing the Twist in Bilsthorpe Miners Welfare), but the 60's rocked! Driving up Mansfield Rd after just passing my test and I heard Purple Haze on Radio 1 for the first time, blew me away and set me on a musical path I have never veered away from. All that new music ffs! I saw Bruce Grobbelaar do the twist at Meadow Lane, they played the Chubby Checker song during the warm up for the September 91 clash with Liverpool and he started doing it. I don't think the craze hit Britain until 1960 at the earliest, probably peaking winter 61/62. You'd likely have had to have done "the Stroll" to have a late 50s dance memory.

Ian McCulloch was the one I tried to emulate in the playground at school, and loved watching.

But saying that you are absolutely right. I can't think of one "character" playing today (The most recent one I can bring to mind is Gazza?). Back in the day it was so free-flowing and nowhere near as robotic as it is today. Why, I remember....... Not many if any, I think Javis as the potential to be one if he stays in the game long enough just the right mix of skill and rebellion in his personality.

Darren Caskey liked doing the Mashed Potato. The only problem was he liked doing the pies, steaks and chicken too. He should have Walked the Dog more frequently.

I was very tempted to make my user name 'the pie Darren Caskey ate'

Wasn't that Stubbsy v Southampton? IIRC Bob Worthington said he made a hand gesture towards the County Road stand after scoring the last minute equaliser against Rotherham March 1972, as a response to the abuse he'd been getting from that stand. Brian Stubbs dropped his shorts and showed his backside to the referee over a free-kick placement dispute against Millwall August 1976, he'd already been booked and was sent off for it, then had to attend an FA Disciplinary Committee. On the Magpie Circle he does speak of the hand gestures but also that he dropped his shorts.

Interestingly who was the referee when Stubbsy dropped his shorts 🙈 Notts lost the game 1-2 but won the away game by 5 -2 . The away game was on 22/02/1977, the match referee being ,the memorable Clive Thomas of Treorchy
